All our products now contain Celcote in the compost.

Celcote is a water managament additive which will control water supply and can reduce watering by between 25 and 50% with no reduction in plant quality.

Managing water use with no compromise on plant quality

Following the introduction of water management compost additive Celcote across all hanging basket, container, pack and pot bedding plant products at Baginton Nurseries in early spring, Jack Olds, production manager, reviews the first season.

“With an annual metered water bill of £9,500 in 2011 we were understandably keen to explore options which could help us reduce this cost,” comments Jack Olds. “And the ability to control and manage water using Celcote is why we decided to start a year long trial from last spring,” he explains.

Baginton Nurseries specialise in bedding plants, hanging baskets and containers to supply local garden centres and Local Authorities on contract from their six acre site in Coventry.

“Quality for us is first and foremost, backed up by account management and our attention to detail. In general terms for many producers the year has been terrible, but even this spring we have had the best ever plants coming out of our doors,” he says.

“But we certainly aren’t weather proof, like many others the weather has been a hindrance,” he says. Since having Celcote supplied pre-mixed in their compost from William Sinclair Horticulture he is clear on the benefits it is bringing. “It has most definitely helped us, it’s been integral,” believes Jack.

He recalls that last year temperatures were very high, demanding masses of water. “And I’m aware that this season so far has not been a true reflection of normal years either, but it’s clear conditions are becoming more erratic and its highlighting our vulnerability.

“The sun has been out at times,” notes Jack. “At times temperatures over quite a number of weekends went above 20oC. Where usually it’s a challenge to keep on top of watering and cover the six acres of production space, to avoid plants reaching the wilting point, Celcote has been brilliant. We have certainly noticed the difference compared to last year.”

“And where normally we would find everything could go flat during a hot weekend and then if given too much water, bolt, this hasn’t been the case this season,” he says.

Providing a useful water management tool, Celcote means that the frequency of watering is reduced and subsequently the nursery is applying feed less often, as the quantities leached are vastly reduced, explains Jack.

“Watering less also means the product isn’t stretching, so we are able reduce our chemical inputs in terms of growth regulation, which is great.

“We are also finding that the product is increasing the shelf life of our plants – which is a must for this season for us and our customers. It is making a considerable difference, we couldn’t have done without it,” he says.

Jack believes that especially for bedding plant production, the use of Celcote works particularly well for these fast growing crops which can dry out very quickly in a general bedding mix compost.

“And the economic benefits – time spent watering, cost of feed have both been reduced.

The log of daily watering hours will also provide a good gauge at the end of the year, he adds.

When asked for any advice to those considering Celcote he said that it’s a case of having to take the plunge and see. “It’s important to test it, explore the product in your own glass and tunnels, knowing your own crops and environment.

“We have certainly been learning how far we can go with the product, and now have the confidence to wait that extra day without watering.”
